What it is

Remarketing: the essentials

Remarketing isn't a separate campaign type. It's your own audience data that we connect to different campaigns. Site visitors (via the Google tag and GA4 audiences), customers from your CRM (Customer Match), viewers of your YouTube channel: these are all segments that work in Search, Display, YouTube and Demand Gen, and as audience signals for Performance Max.

The power of remarketing lies in segmentation. Someone who abandoned a cart yesterday and someone who read one blog post six months ago are different audiences, with different value and different messages. We build segments by depth of action and recency, exclude people who already bought, cap frequency and make sure data collection complies with Consent Mode v2 and Google's personalized advertising policies.

Google Search Audiences in Search campaigns (RLSA): in “Observation” mode to see how returning visitors behave, in “Targeting” mode so that broader queries reach only warm audiences.
Google Display Network Google's partner sites and apps: responsive ads and dynamic banners featuring the products or services a person viewed.
YouTube Repeat impressions for your channel viewers and site visitors: ads before videos, in Shorts and in the recommendations feed.
Gmail and Discover Visual ads and carousels in Demand Gen campaigns, where audiences can be defined precisely and split by segment.
Performance Max Your lists become an audience signal that helps the algorithm find buyers faster. You can also set a separate new customer acquisition priority.
Mechanics

How it works under the hood

  1. 01

    We collect data

The Google tag or GTM, GA4 audiences, customer lists from your CRM and YouTube channel interactions, all with user consent taken into account.

  2. 02

    We segment

We split the audience by depth (viewed a service, pricing, cart, purchased) and recency (days, weeks, months). Each segment has its own value.

  3. 03

    We connect to campaigns

Hot segments go to Search and dynamic remarketing, warm ones to Demand Gen and YouTube, and all lists serve as signals in Performance Max.

  4. 04

    We guide toward a decision

We show a sequence of messages, from benefits to reviews to an offer. People who already bought are excluded or moved to a repeat-sales scenario.

Who it’s for

When to use Remarketing

Long consideration cycles

Custom furniture, education, real estate, B2B: people compare options for weeks, and remarketing keeps you in view the whole time.

Online stores with abandoned carts

Dynamic ads show exactly the products a person viewed or added to the cart, with the current price from the feed.

Businesses with a customer base

Customer Match lets you reach buyers from your CRM: repeat orders, related products, service reminders.

Expensive search traffic

Audiences in Search let you evaluate returning visitors separately and open up broader queries only to people who already know the brand.

Seasonal promotions and launches

Warm audiences are the first to hear about a sale, a new collection or course enrollment, and they usually respond faster than cold ones.

Services with repeat visits

Auto repair, tire shops, beauty salons: we remind past customers about a seasonal tire change or their next appointment.

Formats

Ad formats and their anatomy

Responsive display ads

Headlines, descriptions, images and a logo that Google assembles into an ad for each placement.

Dynamic remarketing

Ads featuring products or services from a Merchant Center feed or your own feed: photo, name and price of exactly what the person viewed.

YouTube video

Short videos for channel viewers and site visitors: answers to objections, customer reviews, product demos.

Demand Gen ads

Images, carousels and video on YouTube, Gmail and Discover for warm segments, with a clear call to action.

Search ads for returning visitors

Separate RSA copy for people who have already been on the site: instead of an introduction, reasons to choose you and a concrete offer.

What we do

What we set up in the campaign: 12 steps

No templates: we adapt every item to your niche, margins and goals. Here’s what our launch checklist looks like.

  1. 01 Tag and Consent Mode v2 We check the Google tag or GTM and implement a consent banner and Consent Mode v2 so lists fill correctly and in line with requirements.
  2. 02 Linking GA4 and Google Ads We link the properties, enable data collection for personalized advertising and import GA4 audiences built on event conditions.
  3. 03 A segment map by depth Viewed a service, the pricing page, the cart, started checkout, submitted a request, purchased: each step becomes a separate list.
  4. 04 Recency windows We split segments by recency, for example 1–7, 8–30 and 31–90 days, so hot contacts get a different message than older ones.
  5. 05 Membership duration We match it to your business's real sales cycle instead of leaving the default value.
  6. 06 Exclusions We remove people who already converted, careers page visitors and current customers from prospecting campaigns.
  7. 07 Customer Match We prepare email and phone lists from your CRM with consenting contacts only and set up regular updates through Data Manager.
  8. 08 Dynamic remarketing feed We match product IDs in tag events against the IDs in the Merchant Center feed, so the ad shows exactly the product that was viewed.
  9. 09 Audiences in Search We add lists to Search campaigns in “Observation” mode and create separate ad groups in “Targeting” mode for broader queries.
  10. 10 Frequency and placements We cap impression frequency wherever the campaign type allows and exclude unsuitable placements: kids' apps, games, questionable sites.
  11. 11 Creative sequence We prepare a chain of messages for each stage: benefits, reviews, answers to objections, a limited-time offer.
  12. 12 Policy check We check the niche and the copy against Google's personalized advertising policies: ads must not imply anything about a person's personal circumstances.
Audit

The mistakes we find most often

If your ads are already running, let’s start with an audit. Here’s what usually eats up the budget in this campaign type.

Mistake 01

One list for everyone

“All visitors in the past year” and a single banner ad. Someone with a full cart and a random blog reader get the same message and the same bid.

Mistake 02

Advertising what people already bought

Buyers aren't excluded: budget goes to people who are already customers, and these ads only annoy them.

Mistake 03

Lists don't fill

The tag is installed with errors, or consent mode is implemented so that no data is passed at all. The report shows empty or tiny audiences.

Mistake 04

Remarketing in a restricted niche

Medical and other sensitive services using personalized lists: disapproved ads and a risk of account penalties.

Mistake 05

Dynamic ads without the right products

Tag IDs don't match the feed, so instead of the products people viewed, the ads show generic banners or random items.

Mistake 06

Remarketing “claims” sales

Results are judged by view-through conversions with no incrementality check. It looks like there are plenty of sales, although people would have bought without the ads.

Metrics

What we track

  • Cost per conversion by segment Cart, pricing page, all visitors: each one separately. That shows where to add budget and which segment is only good for reach.
  • Conversion rate vs. cold traffic If warm audiences don't convert better than new ones, the problem lies in the message or the site, not in the bids.
  • Impression frequency How many times one person sees the ads. Excessive frequency annoys people and wastes budget, so we track unique reach.
  • List size and match rate How many active users each segment has and what the Customer Match rate is. A list that is too small won't get impressions.
  • Incrementality How many sales came specifically from remarketing. We separate click-through and view-through conversions and, where possible, test with a control group.
  • Conversion value and ROAS For an online store, order value matters more than order count, so we evaluate dynamic remarketing by return on ad spend.
Bidding

Bid strategies

Maximize conversions and Target CPA For campaigns targeting hot segments with enough conversion volume. We set different targets for cart abandoners and for all visitors.
Target ROAS (tROAS) For dynamic remarketing in e-commerce, when the value of each order is passed to Google Ads.
Audiences as a Smart Bidding signal In automated strategies, manual audience bid adjustments don't apply: the algorithm accounts for the list on its own. So segmentation quality is what matters, not percentages.
Target CPM for reach In video reach campaigns for warm audiences, when the goal is to remind people of the brand ahead of the season rather than to get a click.

FAQ

Questions and answers: Remarketing

Didn’t find your answer? Ask us directly — we’ll advise for free.

Won't ads that “follow” people around be annoying?

What annoys people isn't remarketing but poor setup: the same ad shown hundreds of times and ads for things they already bought. We cap frequency, set segment recency, change the message from one impression to the next and exclude people who already purchased.

Can a clinic or medical center use remarketing?

Google's policies prohibit personalized advertising based on health data, so lists of visitors to medical pages can't be used for targeting. Instead, we work with Search, contextual targeting and local ads. We set up audience collection so that it doesn't violate the policy.

How many people need to be on a list for remarketing to work?

Google serves ads only to lists that have reached a minimum number of active users over the last 30 days. For sites with modest traffic, we combine small segments, extend the recency window and strengthen acquisition through Search in parallel.

Do we need a consent banner if we only operate in Ukraine?

For visitors from the EU, Consent Mode v2 is mandatory, otherwise personalized ads and remarketing won't work for them. In Ukraine, the Law On Personal Data Protection applies, and legislation is gradually moving closer to European standards. We take this into account during setup and implement the banner and consent mode as standard practice, and we recommend having your privacy policy reviewed by a lawyer.

How does remarketing work in Performance Max?

In Performance Max, your lists are an audience signal, not a hard limit: the algorithm uses them as a hint and can show ads to other people. You can also set a separate new customer acquisition priority. When you need precise control over who sees what, we use Demand Gen, Display campaigns and audiences in Search.

How can we tell whether remarketing actually drives sales?

We separate click-through and view-through conversions, compare the behavior of warm segments with cold traffic and, where volumes allow, run tests with a control group. That reveals the real incremental lift, not just sales that would have happened without the ads.
