Niche specifics

Why ads for Online Courses & Schools can’t follow a template

01

Cheap sign-ups that don't buy

A free webinar collects lots of contacts, but most people never make it to the live session or the payment. If the algorithm optimizes only for sign-ups, those are exactly the users it finds.

02

A long path to a decision

People watch several webinars, read reviews, compare programs and come back weeks later. Without remarketing and proper attribution, ads look unprofitable even though they're what drives the sales.

03

Competing with big platforms

Big platforms and course aggregators compete for generic searches like “online courses.” A smaller school does better coming in through specific professions, skills and audience goals.

04

Video creatives burn out fast

Launch videos and banners quickly wear out the audience, and their performance drops. You need a steady flow of new angles: lesson snippets, instructors, student stories.

Sample ad

Here’s what your ad could look like

This is just one variation. In a responsive search ad, we write up to 15 headlines and 4 descriptions, and Google assembles the best combination for each search.

  • The search keyword appears in the first headline
  • A concrete benefit and offer instead of generic claims
  • A call to action that matches the goal: call, booking, directions
  • Sitelinks lead to relevant pages

Analytics

What we count as a result

Automated bid strategies learn from the data we feed them. That’s why we only count actions that lead to sales.

  • Webinar sign-up
  • Webinar attendance (offline conversion)
  • Trial lesson booking
  • Consultation request
  • Course payment (online or from CRM)

Demand seasonality

Demand for learning rises from late August to October and after the New Year holidays, when people plan career changes. Interest dips in summer, which makes it a good time to build remarketing audiences and test creatives before the fall launch.

FAQ

Common questions about ads for Online Courses & Schools

Answers to the questions business owners ask most often before launch.

Why do ads bring lots of sign-ups but few sales?

Most often the algorithm optimizes for the cheapest action — a sign-up — and finds people who only want free content. We send payment data and sales value from your CRM to Google Ads so bidding works toward an audience that's ready to pay. We also check whether traffic comes from searches by people looking to get the course for free.

What's better for an online school: Search or YouTube?

They do different jobs. Search catches people already looking for a specific course, but its volume is limited. YouTube and Demand Gen create demand and warm up the audience through the instructor and the content. For most schools we combine both and allocate the budget based on results in payments.

When should we start advertising a new cohort launch?

In advance: first we build an audience through a webinar or lead magnet, then warm it up with remarketing closer to the start of sales. Algorithms need time to learn, so launching ads a few days before the start is usually not very effective.

How do we track a sale if payment happens after a call with a sales manager?

When a lead comes in, we store the Google click ID or the data for enhanced conversions for leads. When the manager closes the deal, the payment is imported from your CRM into Google Ads as an offline conversion. That way the system sees which campaigns and searches lead to real sales.

Do we need a separate page for each course?

Ideally, yes. The page should match the search and the ad: curriculum, format, instructor, duration, payment options. A generic page listing all courses usually converts worse. If you don't have such pages, we can build them alongside the ad launch.
