YouTube Ads: the essentials
Google Ads Video campaigns show your video on YouTube: before and during videos, in the recommendations feed, in YouTube search, in Shorts and on TV screens, as well as on Google video partner sites and apps. Here, people aren't searching for you yet, but they're already watching content on a related topic. YouTube's job is to create demand and brand recall, so that when the need arises, it's your name they type into search.
In 2026, Video campaigns are primarily about reach and views: the Efficient reach, Non-skippable reach, Target frequency, Ad sequence and Video views subtypes. Google has moved conversion-focused Video action campaigns into Demand Gen, so that's where we build YouTube leads and sales. We use Video campaigns for what they do best: delivering your message to the right people the right number of times, in a controlled way.
How it works under the hood
- 01
Goal and campaign subtype
We define the objective: reaching a new audience, repeat exposure, views of a long-form video or a story told across several videos. This determines the campaign subtype, formats and pricing model: per thousand impressions or per view.
- 02
Audience and context
We set who sees the ads: custom segments based on Google searches, your customer lists, website visitors, interests and intent, as well as channels, topics and content suitability level.
- 03
Auction and delivery
Google evaluates every impression: whether the viewer, context and device fit, and how many times the person has already seen the video. The budget is allocated across in-stream, the feed, Shorts and TV wherever the goal is achieved more efficiently.
- 04
Measuring impact
We look beyond views: unique reach, average frequency, quartile retention, Brand Lift, engaged-view conversions and the trend in branded search queries.
When to use YouTube Ads
Launching a new product or brand
When nobody is searching for you yet, Search ads have nothing to work with. YouTube builds awareness and initial interest, which later grows into demand.
Growing branded search
After watching a video, some viewers search for you by name on Google. Branded queries are usually cheaper and convert better: YouTube creates them, and Search captures them.
Niches with a complex buying decision
Real estate, cars, education, healthcare: people need to see what it looks like, who's behind it and why they can trust you.
Scaling once Search is maxed out
When Search campaigns already capture the core demand and only bids keep rising, video expands your audience instead of fighting over the same queries.
Products that are better shown than described
Demos, the work process, results, unboxing: things a text ad can't convey but 15 seconds of video explains instantly.
Re-engaging a warm audience
Website visitors, channel viewers, buyers: short videos that answer objections and feature reviews and new offers.
Ad formats and their anatomy
Skippable in-stream
A video of any length; the “Skip” button appears after 5 seconds. With cost-per-view bidding, you pay when someone watches 30 seconds (or the full video, if shorter) or interacts with it.
Non-skippable in-stream
Up to 15 seconds; the viewer sees the full message. Priced per thousand impressions. Suited to a key offer that can't be cut off mid-sentence.
Bumper ads
Up to 6 seconds, non-skippable: one idea and the brand on screen. They work best as reminders paired with longer videos in Ad sequence or Target frequency campaigns.
In-feed video ads
A thumbnail with text in YouTube search and recommendations. Viewers click to watch, so the format works well for reviews, case studies and demos.
Shorts ads
A 9:16 vertical video in the Shorts feed. Native delivery, a fast pace, a person on screen from the first second and captions, since some views happen with the sound off.
Videos for TV screens
In-stream and bumper ads run on TV. The video has to read from the couch: a large logo, minimal small text, and a QR code or short URL instead of “click.”
What we set up in the campaign: 11 steps
No templates: we adapt every item to your niche, margins and goals. Here’s what our launch checklist looks like.
- 01 Media plan before launch We forecast reach and frequency in Google's Reach Planner so the budget fits the objective, not the other way around.
- 02 Subtype matched to the goal We choose between Efficient reach, Target frequency, Ad sequence and Video views based on what should happen with the viewer.
- 03 Segments based on Google searches We build custom segments of people who searched your key queries on Google or are interested in competitor websites: the YouTube audience closest to Search.
- 04 Your data and Customer Match We connect lists of website visitors, channel viewers and customers (if the account meets Google's requirements) to re-engage warm audiences and exclude those who have already bought.
- 05 Channels, topics, placements For niche products, we add target channels and videos, and we exclude kids' content, mobile games and irrelevant topics.
- 06 Content suitability We choose the inventory type and exclude sensitive categories, embedded videos and live streams if they don't fit your brand's tone.
- 07 Frequency capping We set a weekly limit on impressions per person to avoid irritating the same audience and to spread the budget across broader reach.
- 08 Videos for every screen We separate mobile, desktop and TV when the creatives for Shorts and TV differ: the format has to match the screen.
- 09 Scripts based on ABCD principles We prepare briefs or scripts: a hook in the first 5 seconds, the brand on screen right away, captions for sound-off viewing, a clear call to action and a separate vertical version.
- 10 YouTube channel and tagging We link your YouTube channel to Google Ads to build viewer audiences and see earned actions after ads, and we add a call to action and UTM parameters.
- 11 Measurement baseline We record the baseline level of branded searches in Search Console and Google Ads, set up conversions and, if the budget meets Google's threshold, run a Brand Lift study.
The mistakes we find most often
If your ads are already running, let’s start with an audit. Here’s what usually eats up the budget in this campaign type.
Expecting leads from a reach campaign
A reach campaign gets judged like a Search campaign, shows few conversions and is switched off after a week. Its yardsticks are reach, frequency and brand demand; video-driven leads are built in Demand Gen.
One video for every format
A one-minute horizontal video runs both in Shorts and on TVs. In Shorts, people swipe past it; on TV, the small text is unreadable. Each screen gets its own version.
Brand and message at the end
The logo and offer appear at the 20-second mark, even though the video can be skipped after five. We move the brand and main idea into the first seconds.
No placement control
Impressions on kids' cartoons, gaming apps and random channels eat up the budget. We regularly clean up the “Where ads showed” report and maintain account-level exclusion lists.
No frequency cap or exclusions
The same person sees the video too often, and existing customers keep getting “get to know us” ads. We set a frequency cap and exclude people who have already converted.
The impact gets lost at the next step
The video works, but nobody captures the branded searches: there's no brand Search campaign, the website is slow, leads get a reply the next day. We set up the entire path, not just the video.
What we track
- Unique reach and average frequency How many different people in your target audience saw the video and how many times. Too low a frequency and the message doesn't stick; too high and it annoys.
- View rate The share of impressions that became paid views. A low rate signals that the first seconds don't hook viewers or the audience is poorly targeted.
- Cost per view (CPV) and cost per thousand impressions (CPM) We compare videos and audiences against each other, not against “benchmarks from the internet”: a cheap view from the wrong person does nothing for the business.
- Quartile retention How many viewers reached 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of the video. It shows the second where interest drops and what should be re-edited.
- Brand Lift A Google survey of people who did and didn't see the ad: ad recall, awareness, consideration. Direct evidence that the video changed brand perception.
- Engaged-view conversions and branded search Actions on the site after someone watches at least 10 seconds of the video without clicking, plus the trend in branded searches: this shows how YouTube feeds back into sales.

Questions and answers: YouTube Ads

Can we get leads directly from YouTube?
Yes, but today that's done with a Demand Gen campaign: Google moved the former conversion-focused Video campaigns there. It shows video on YouTube, Discover and Gmail and optimizes for leads or sales. We keep classic Video campaigns for reach and views; they warm up the audience, which then converts through Search and remarketing.
What video do we need to get started?
At minimum, a 15–30 second horizontal version and a vertical one for Shorts. Ideally, a set: a six-second bumper, a short version with the offer and a longer explainer video. Expensive production isn't required: a person on camera, a real process and a clear message often work better than a staged shoot.
Why does a reach campaign get so few clicks?
Because it has a different goal. People come to YouTube to watch content and rarely go to a website right away. The effect shows up later: in growing branded searches, direct visits to the site and post-view conversions. Those are the metrics we include in our reports.
How can we tell whether YouTube actually affected sales?
Before launch, we record the baseline level of branded search and track how it changes, and we analyze engaged-view conversions. If the budget meets Google's thresholds, we run a Brand Lift or Search Lift study with a control group. This gives you a picture you won't see in a click report.
Can we show ads on specific channels?
Yes, through placement targeting: channels or individual videos. But a very narrow list limits reach and raises the price. We combine relevant channels with audiences based on Google searches and make sure ads don't end up on kids' or questionable content.
Is it worth showing ads on TV screens?
For brands with a broad audience, yes: YouTube on TV is watched on a big screen, often by several people, with the sound on. But nobody there will click a button, so the video has to be visually memorable. We measure the results of this placement through reach and branded search.
